Site Prep

A suitable greenhouse location will not only provide optimal growing conditions but also facilitate efficient daily operations of the greenhouse. A well-planned site will maintain easy access for people as well as equipment and supplies. Trees can provide a lot of shade meanwhile blocking valuable lumen’s needed to accelerate the rate of photosynthesis in plants. The greenhouse should be situated far enough away from other buildings so as not to be shadowed. Falling or blowing debris from trees or any other potentially damaging material need to be considered as well. One long wall of the greenhouse should be oriented to the south in northern regions to provide more available winter light.

We offer site preparation services such as excavating an area or grading a slight slope for proper drainage. Most site locations won’t be totally flat therefore requiring backfilling based upon the amount of grade difference. Gravel over ground cloth is highly recommended due to the many advantages offered especially at such a low cost per square foot.

It is very important that water drainage from both the roof and watering of plants be considered when selecting a location. Building on a slightly elevated ground and backfilling with gravel will give that slight bit of grade needed for an adequate runoff. A dam or diversion may also be installed on the uphill side to divert water from running into the structure. Natural wind flow patterns should also be utilized especially when relying solely upon passive ventilation.

Strong winds impose a significant effect on exhaust fans and should not be faced in the primary wind direction of persistent weather. You will likely want power and water to the greenhouse so arrangements should be made in the initial planning. The setup of the greenhouse and what it will be running will determine the amount of available power needed to the building. Grow lights and heaters draw a lot of power whereas small fans and pumps generally don’t consume much. If you have any questions or would like an evaluation of your proposed location please don’t hesitate to contact us and we will be happy to offer a consultation.
